David Copperfield at The New Wolsey

Guildford Shakespeare Company presents a new adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic David Copperfield at Ipswich’s New Wolsey Theatre 27 – 31 January 2026

Fresh from their internationally acclaimed production of Pride & Prejudice, Guildford Shakespeare Company returns to New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich from Tuesday 27 to Saturday 31 January with David Copperfield, a brand new stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’s beloved novel.

Young David Copperfield of Blunderstone Rookery (with no rooks in it) is quickly tossed into a world of peculiar aunts, tyrannical stepfathers and dismal boarding schools… but this is not your regular Victorian novel, and David is not your regular hero. Charles Dickens’ ‘favourite son’ is the whirlwind tale of a young man’s life from humble beginnings to literary renown; a journey of romance and adventure filled with lovable rogues, wily scoundrels and benevolent patrons.

With Guildford Shakespeare Company celebrating 20 years since their first production, David Copperfield reunites the original Pride & Prejudice creative team led by Abigail Pickard Price, who has adapted the novel with Sarah Gobran and Matt Pinches, and also directs.

In what promises to be an enchanting romp stuffed with Victorian charm, three actors bring to life 19 of Charles Dickens’ magnificently drawn characters including the deliciously eccentric Betsy Trotwood, scheming Uriah Heep, adorable Peggotty and one of his greatest comedy creations, the irrepressible Mr Micawber.

David Copperfield runs at the New Wolsey Theatre from Tues 27-Sat 31 January 2026 (7pm, 7:30pm, 2pm & 2:30pm). Age suitability: 8+ To book tickets visit their website.
