Shivers me Timbers! If you’re looking for an alternative to a panto as a Christmas treat this year then Eastern Angles have come up trumps again.

This is a wonderful piece of storytelling as you’d expect from Eastern Angles, who never fail to deliver, and add a local twist to a classic tale.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale has been re-imagined in Dunwich, where the lost island emerges from the sea once a year on Christmas Eve. Can Jim Hawkins and the crew find the treasure before mutiny strikes or the island sinks back into the sea?

Jim Hawkins, played with gusto and spirit by Chileya Mwampulo, longs for adventure on the high seas and when a late night story starts to come to life, Jim is swept away with pirates, mutiny and skulduggery. The character of Jim is rarely off stage and Chileya shows tremendous energy in the part.

Jim’s nemesis is the infamous Long John Silver. Emma Zadow swaggers with magnificent menace as the legendary pirate, leading a mutinous crew of youth theatre young actors. There’s three crews, The Jolly Roger, Barbara Skorczak, Dexter Patrick Samain and Helena Reilly; or The Black Pearl Freddie Moy, Kim Hahn and Penelope Thurston; or The Flying Dutchman Georgina Makey, Fern Smith and Mia McLellan.

Charlie Venables delights as Billy Bones, Ben Gunn and as a dashing Captain Smollett. He’s brooding over potential mutiny one minute and making you laugh, or jump out of your skin the next. The big number he does as Ben Gunn, Ham and Cheese, is a highlight.

Georgina Liley, is a stoic and loyal Squire Trelawney as well as playing Pew and Captain Flint. She also displays her talents for the violin and accordion as well as puppetry.

The whole cast are extremely talented and as we’ve come to expect from Eastern Angles the show is tight, full of fun and laughter with exceptional storytelling.

This is a must see for the festive season.
