London Classic Theatre Celebrates 25 Years with Alan Ayckbourn’s Just Between Ourselves

Coming to Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds 3rd – 7th June

Dennis holes up in his garage, trying to mend things but never quite finishing. He’s been trying to sell his wife Vera’s car and might well succeed if he ever fixes the garage door. Neil is looking for a car for his restless wife Pam, in the hope that it might help her spread her wings. In Dennis, Neil finds a man to whom he thinks he can open up to about the cracks in his marriage. But Dennis’ own marriage is rocky, as he seems to ignore the fact that Vera’s mental health is deteriorating fast, spurred on by constant criticism from her live-in mother-in-law Marjorie.

Set in 1976, the play explores the unravelling of two working-class couples amidst domestic tensions and suppressed emotions. Dennis, a detached car salesman, and his wife, Vera, who is experiencing a mental breakdown, interact with Neil and Pam, a couple grappling with their own marital issues. The narrative delves into themes of emotional repression and the complexities of 1970s marriages, blending comedy with darker psychological undertones.

The cast features Connie Walker as Marjorie, Joseph Clowser as Neil, Helen Phillips as Pam, Tom Richardson as Dennis, and Holly Smith as Vera. The creative team includes set and costume designer Elizabeth Wright and lighting designer Clare O’Donoghue.

Alan Ayckbourn’s Just Between Ourselves is at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds from the 3rd– 7th of June.
