Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds takes us back to the Land of Oz this summer with Dorothy, Back In Oz, the sequel to their 2023 summer title, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, both written by Mike Akers. Based on the 1985 film Return to Oz, this new musical is full of singing, dancing, hope and happiness with a good dose of adventure and intrigue thrown in!
This is a community production, created in-house by Theatre Royal and supported by Bury St Edmunds Town Council involving local young people aged 9-19.

After a huge storm hits Stowmarket, Dorothy finds herself transported back to the magical Land of Oz, with only her trusty talking chicken, Billina, for company.
But all is not well… The yellow brick road has been smashed and the Emerald City lies in ruins. The Gnome King now sits on the throne and he happens to be wearing a rather fabulous pair of slippers… Dorothy meets new friends along the way who help her overcome the Gnome King and restore hope to the people of Oz.

Community is a heart of Theatre Royal with a huge learning programme that runs throughout the year including; adult acting groups, writers groups, young people’s youth theatre and special projects in schools. Their summer production is no exception to this framework as Theatre Royal involves a cast of 16 young people from the local area to play named roles and form the Young Company in their summer show.
These young people are able to learn and grow throughout this process, working alongside a professional adult cast, industry professionals and the Theatre Royal team to create a high-quality production for all the family.
