Bury Theatre Workshop Present – The Seagull by Anton Chekhov

The Cast of The Seagull – Bury Theatre Workshop

Bury Theatre Workshop are presenting The Seagull by Anton Chekhov from 14th – 16th March at The Quay in Sudbury.

Chekhov described the play as – a comedy in four acts, with rural scenery, much talk of literature, little action and five bushels of love. This modest description of the play, first performed in 1896, says little about a work that forever changed the nature and possibilities of drama.

This particular version is translated by Michael Frayn and brings a contemporary feel to the play, with wit and charm, retaining the sensitive and profound observations on the human condition that Chekhov intended.

The Seagull is directed by Tim Lodge, who founded Bury Theatre Workshop with some other theatre enthusiasts back in 2012.

Tim has directed many plays but this is his first stab at Chekhov.

He said “You certainly need a lot of confidence to tackle the subtle yet powerful characterisations and emotions portrayed in The Seagull.  Over the course of rehearsals, however, I have come to realise why Chekhov is considered one of the greatest playwrights.”

“This play glimpses truths about the human condition that are rarely encountered in other works.  I hope we can bring some of these to the Sudbury audience.  I’m very proud of our actors in The Seagull, which seems to generate a creative spirit in the rehearsal room.  This is producing some of the best acting I have seen Bury Theatre Workshop achieve.”

Tim added. “This is our first appearance at The Quay and I hope we will establish ourselves as regular contributors to their programme. “

Tim is also a great believer in the therapeutic and soul-enhancing capability of theatre, for both actors and audience, and Bury Theatre Workshop is described as a ‘community theatre group’, which wants to be inclusive to all.

For example tickets prices for The Seagull for under 18’s and students under 21 are lower than standard tickets, as they believe affordable theatre is important, and potentially life changing, for young people.
