Stellar Acapella – A Stellar Performance

Stellar Acapella are an all female close harmony choir with a big sound.

Their evening of song at Dance East was a warm evening in more ways than one. The heat may have caused the audience to find solace in flapping programmes and tickets at themselves, in an attempt to stave off the sticky evening – some clever people like the Mayor of Ipswich, Lynn Mortimer, had the foresight to bring her own hand fan – but the real warmth was radiating from the stage.

This is a choir about community, friendship and confidence. The women in Stella Acapella are obviously incredibly close and supportive of each other and get a lot out of meeting, singing and performing together – but most importantly they make a terrific sound. Singing in 4 part harmony, they mix standards, songs from the shows and modern pop songs and their repertoire creates a wonderful, rich and textured tone.

Joining them in the show was the premier of 4 piece ‘Simply Stellar’ – 3 members of the choir and their Musical Director Gaynor Schofield – who sung terrifically together in close harmony. Also on the bill was the award winning Barber Shop quartet ‘Portobello Road’, who as well as having fantastic voices, injected a good deal of comedy into their routines and added to the entertainment; they were extremely popular with the audience and a great addition to the programme. The whole show was MC’d by Wayne Bavin, from BBC Radio Suffolk, who kept the energy up between the acts.

Look out for Stellar Acapella when they next have a concert in Suffolk as they are well worth going to see – and hear! A huge thank you to choir member Laura Locke for inviting me to the show.

Keep an eye on the What’s On page on this website for news of their next concerts.
